Walled Gardens at Edzell Castle

Edzell Castle and Garden, near Brechin

The gardens surrounding Edzell Castle are stimulating. Ruined Castle open.

The 'great garden' at Edzell Castle is of historic interest and goes back to 1604, when the owners the Lindsays created it, and is much the same as it would have been then.
It was designed not only for pleasure but also to stimulate the mind. The garden measures approximately 60 metres by 60 metres.
Initially one might wonder why we feature this garden but as you look closer you will find one of the most unusual gardens you are likely to see.
Visitors enter through the castle  to discover nesting holes and flower recesses set into walls now planted with blue and white lobelia. You will not be the only visitors as many swallows make it their summer home.
There are parterres of box shaped and trimmed into the design of Fleur de Lys, Scottish Thistle and English Rose, and within these are a selection of roses.
On the wall are a series of historic stone panels representing the Seven Cardinal Virtues, the Seven Liberal Arts and Seven Planetary Deities.
The castle, in redstone, can also be discovered and there is a great guide book to explain all.
