Wakehurst, beautiful Gardens, near Haywards Heath
Wakehurst was leased by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 1965 from the National Trust. Wonderful in every season from Spring to Winter. situated in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' on the High Weald of Sussex.
Wakehurst, Kew's wild botanic garden in Sussex, situated in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' on the High Weald of Sussex.
Its higher rainfall, more moisture retentive soils and range of microclimates complement the conditions at Kew and allow the plant collections to be greatly enhanced. The gardens are very extensive and you should allow at least half a day if not more.
There is much to see including colourful herbaceous borders, a series of water gardens, Asian Heath garden, a fine collection of trees and many other rare plants.
The Gardens are now home to the National Seed Bank which is conserving around about 10% of the world's plant species for the future. This great conservation project means that it could conserve 20% of the world's plant species by 2020.
Wakehurst Place was one of our favourite gardens to visit when we lived in the area.
This is truly a great garden.
