Petworth House and Park, National Trust, GU28 9LR

The Petworth House Pleasure Gardens originated in the 16th century but were significantly re-developed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in the late 18th century. There are wonderful displays of daffodils in the Spring but formal flower displays are generally confined to the private Walled Garden which is rarely open.

As part of his grand design, Brown masterfully introduced several key elements and features:

• Architectural Placement: He carefully suggested sites for the Doric Temple and the Ionic Rotunda. These locations were chosen specifically to ensure impressive views both to and from the structures, making the monuments integral viewing points in the landscape.

• Abolishing Boundaries: He introduced a ha-ha (a recessed landscape design element) to create a seamless visual transition between the Pleasure Gardens and the broader Park, essentially giving the illusion of an uninterrupted landscape.

• Winding Paths: Brown designed winding paths leading from the House and continuing around the grounds, encouraging visitors to explore the landscape's features and views.

• The Lake at Petworth:
  Brown is also credited with creating the iconic lake at Petworth House between 1753 and 1757. He designed both the Upper Pond and the Lower Pond, which are now fundamental and integral parts of the Petworth landscape.

  The famous artist visited Petworth repeatedly, enjoying long stays as a guest of the Earl of Egremont.
