Glamis Castle and Gardens, Forfar

Glamis Castle, Forfar was the childhood home of the late Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret

This grand Scottish Castle was the childhood home of The Queen Mother and birthplace of the late Princess Margaret. The Queen mother's parents adapted the shrubberies on the east side of Glamis Castle Garden to form what is now known as the Italian Garden. Surrounded by high yew hedges, this garden comprises two acres of herbaceous borders immaculately kept with views of the castle. There are two attractive gazebos in 17th century style and two beech avenues.
To the front of the castle is a small rose garden.
The four acre brick-walled kitchen garden, some distance from the house, has a central avenue bordered by herbaceous plants and also features a large fountain. There are exciting plans for the restoration of this garden and several features have already been added.
Also of interest is the Pinetum which has been largely neglected but is still home to some fine trees many of which come from America. This leads to the Princess Margaret Memorial - she has been fondly remembered here.
In the spring the 1 mile drive is lined by magnificent displays of daffodils.

The castle which dates from the 14th century with its fine interior is open to the public and should also be visited.
