Horniman Museum Gardens

Horniman Museum and Gardens, South London

Discover Horniman Museum and its 16 acres of award-winning gardens including parkland, a microforest and display gardens – dye and materials gardens, a Sunken Garden, bee garden, prehistoric planting, xerophytic beds and a stunning Grasslands Garden.

The award-winning Horniman Gardens cover 16 acres, and offer a vibrant mix of horticultural planting, display gardens and parkland, along with London's oldest nature trail, and spectacular views of the London city skyline.
Alongside the Horniman Museum – with free permanent displays of world cultures, natural history and musical instruments – the Gardens have been open to the public since 1901, and continue to provide a green oasis for the south east London community as well as attracting visitors from further afield.
Care for the environment and wildlife is demonstrated throughout the Horniman Gardens, from meadow areas and drought-tolerant planting to a microforest and the Sunken Gardens which have been transitioned way from formal seasonal bedding to a beautiful sustainable planting scheme.
The Display Gardens complement the collections on show inside the museum – including the stunning Grasslands Garden showcasing North American prairie and South African grassland plants, dye and materials gardens, and the Prehistoric Garden of 'living fossil' plants, complete with velociraptor sculpture.
The Butterfly House features tropical plants which are the habitat (and sometimes food source) for hundreds of free-flying butterflies and moths. The Animal Walk is home to alpacas, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. And the Sound Garden's giant playable musical instruments allow visitors to create their own outdoor soundscape.
From sunny lawns for picnicking to shady spots for reading and contemplation, and from horticultural and cultural interpretation, to trails exploring the history and architecture of the site – including 12 sundials – there's something for everyone.
