Highfield Farm Gardens, Pontypool

Discover Highfield Farm Gardens which is arranged in six zones, interlinked by narrow, winding paths, creating a sense of discovery as you walk through it. Staring with a gravel garden where plants gently self-seed to produce natural shades of pastel colour. Here you will find drifts of Scabious, Gaura, Verbena, Eryngiums and others that thrive in the hot, dry conditions. Then an open area in full sun, where a matrix of grasses is studded with randomly repeating perennials, featuring a wide range of umbellifers. Next, a kitchen garden and orchard, then an enclosed area of more tender plants including a range of members of the Aralia family. On then to a garden of giants, where the emphasis is on the vertical, with copper beach, giant grasses and Vernonicas. A more traditional garden follows with a classic mix of trees, shrubs and herbaceous creating a woodland setting where hydrangeas flourish. The garden around the house is more formal and is reached by an allée of multi-stemmed Acers. The garden is densely planted with a very diverse range of plants including large collections of roses, hydrangeas and grasses, all set against the magnificent views of the mountains of north Monmouthshire.
