Westonbirt House Gardens, near Tetbury - (Not Arboretum)

Discover Westonbirt House Gardens - Take a stroll through the pleasure grounds and around the lake originally created by Robert Stayner Holford nearly 200 years ago. In spring walk among the towering trees as the new leaves emerge and admire the blue haze of the anemone glade.
Spend some tranquil time in the beautiful Italian gardens where there are carved pavilions containing original mosaics, heritage rose borders underplanted with pollinator friendly plants, lavender parterres which hum with bees, herbaceous beds, an unusual double pond and an exotic border which towers with giant salvias, tender cannas and vibrantly coloured dahlias from summer and way into autumn.
Wander into the peaceful fernery which has a Victorian pergola cascading with climbing roses, clematis and honeysuckle. In winter this area is full of unusual varieties of snowdrops.
Take a seat in the camellia house, one of very few in the country, and contemplate how this was once a greenhouse in a row of 'cutting edge' Victorian glasshouses, originally heated with a system within the hollow wall which now shelters the exotic border. These glasshouses were once home to orchids, pineapples, palms and other tender plants from around the world. The camellias flower from November through to March, and are supplemented with scented flowers for the rest of the year.
This is an unusual garden with a fascinating history, some wonderful vistas and specially made seats to appreciate them from. All the flower borders are gardened organically and maintained by our head gardener Alix Chalk with her team of volunteers.
