Gilbert White House and Garden, Selborne
The House and Garden of the famous Naturalist
With 5 acres of restored gardens, using plants and methods that Gilbert White a progressive gardener himself describes, and 25 acres of ancient parkland bordered by the great Selborne hanger, a great beech clad hill. Visitors are often left speechless.
The garden inspired by the great gardens of Stowe but cultivated on a more modest budget, is a rare example of a working man's garden. It demonstrates the beauty and ideals of the 18th Century landscape design, with sweeping views, two hahas, classical references, alongside more practical uses, such as hotbeds to grow melons, a vegetable garden specialising in eighteenth century varieties, and of course the features unique to Gilbert White whose personality and passion for the study of nature shine out at every turn.
The Museum and gardens are open throughout the year, with something spectacular to see each season. In Spring the great mead turns a glorious hue of yellow as far as the eye can see with wild flowers, in Summer we have a beautiful collection of historic roses which decorate White's 'six-quarters'. In Autumn the hanger turns spectacular shades of red and orange and the garden yields unusual historic apples and medlars. In Winter appreciate the icy simplicity of the garden, see livestock stroll beyond the haha.
