The 4-acre garden is set within high brick walls which produce give it a micro-climate.
It has a historic rock garden which is one of the oldest in Europe with Alpine and Mediterranean plants.
Sir Joseph Banks, the famous Naturalist, who took part in Captain James Cook's first great voyage (1768–1771) worked here in the 1780–1814 period.
