Friars Court Garden, Clanfield

Beautiful historic house with 3 acres of tranquil gardens

Friars Court and Garden, located in rural West Oxfordshire, is an imposing 17th century farmhouse with 3 acres of gardens enclosed within the remaining arms of a 16th century moat.

There have been buildings on the site since 1149 when the Monastic Knights of St. John founded their first 'Hospitallery' in Oxfordshire.

Level walks guide visitors past formal and informal borders and 'garden rooms', a lily pond and 50-foot living willow tunnel. Beyond the gardens the grounds extend with two woodland walks.

A small museum displays the history of Friars Court and of the Willmer family who have resided in the house for over 100 years, along with Roman and Medieval artefacts recovered from the farmland.

Home-made cream teas and cake are served in the Garden Room.

The gardens are open to the public on select days during the summer months. Private visits for garden clubs and groups, with an informative guided tour of the grounds by the owner Charles Willmer, may also be arranged.
