Little Sparta, Dunsyre, Lanark

Little Sparta - created by Ian Hamilton Finlay, who was shortlisted for the Turner prize in 1985, this is of the few gardens taken seriously as art. Fun, exciting, intelligent and groundbreaking. It is a garden full of words, sculptures and magical moments, like the sudden appearance of a lake with black swan, at the top of a small steep path. A garden of memorials and a memorial garden with a recurrent theme of war and of the sea. Not for the plant spotters, and maybe more of a gallery than a garden. The garden contains the art perhaps more than expresses it.
